Start with the controls
Confirm the washer still has power and that the cycle was not paused. If the control panel is responsive, try the machine’s drain or spin setting once. Avoid repeatedly restarting the washer if it hums, smells hot, or shows the same error.
Check the door or lid
Many washers will not drain or spin unless the door or lid closes properly. Look for clothing caught in the opening and make sure the latch area is clear. Do not force a damaged latch or bypass a safety switch.
Look at the drain hose
Move the appliance only if you can do so safely and without straining water or power connections.
- Make sure the hose behind the washer is not pinched or sharply bent.
- Check that the hose has not fallen too far into the drain pipe.
- Look for visible water backing up at the household drain.
When it is time to call
Schedule service if the washer still holds water, makes a grinding or humming sound, leaks, or stops during the same part of every cycle. The cause may be inside the drain system, pump, lid or door circuit, or controls and should be diagnosed before parts are replaced.
